What is A Plantar Wart (Verruca)?

  • Plantar warts are caused by an infection from the HPV (virus) in the outer layer of skin on the soles of the feet.

    • The warts develop when the virus enters through tiny cuts, breaks or weak spots on the bottom of the foot.

    • Children and teenagers

    • People with weak immune systems

    • Previous history of a wart

    • People who walk barefoot in public areas such as locker rooms and swimming pools

  • Symptoms may begin as a mild ache or stiffness in the back of the leg or above the heel after activity. Overtime this pain may increase and occur during/after running, jumping, stair climbing or sprinting.

  • Common Plantar Wart Treatments

    •  (OTC or Prescription) medications such as salicylic acid.

    • Cryotherapy (Freezing)

    • Cantharidin: A chemical derived from blister beetles, applied by a professional to cause a blister under the wart, which is then removed.

    • Laser Treatment

    • Immunotherapy

    • Surgery: Surgical removal
