What is A Hammertoe Deformity?
Hammertoes deformities are among the most common deformities of the forefoot. It results from an imbalance between the muscles of the foot and the stronger muscles originating at the leg. Hammertoe is a deformity that can be distinguished into categories including the classic hammertoe, mallet toe or claw toe.

Congenital and
Acquired, with the most accepted factor and component being a biomechanical dysfunction.
Neuromuscular conditions
Diabetes
Inflammatory arthropathies
Ill-fitting shoes and high heels
Intrinsic muscle imbalance
Hallux valgus
Long metatarsals

Symptoms may range from mild aches and mild deformity, to painful rigid deformity. The affected toe may become red, swollen, with associated skin changes callus and blister. Patients typically present with chronic pain that is aggravated by walking and shoewear.

Surgical Treatment
If failure of conservative treatment, or significant pain and deformity surgery may be warranted. Flexibility of the deformity as well as foot structure will influence treatment type.
