There are a variety of risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing gout.

Foods and drinks that are high in purines (a chemical compound that the body turns into uric acid) such as:
Alcohol
Sugary drinks
Sugary foods, like snacks with high fructose corn syrup.
Red meat and seafood/shellfish
Other influencing factors: male sex, family history, comorbid conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart failure.

Symptoms may begin as a mild ache or stiffness in the back of the leg or above the heel after activity. Overtime this pain may increase and occur during/after running, jumping, stair climbing or sprinting.

Treatment
Oral medication, over the counter anti-inflammatory, prescription medications
“RICE” Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation of affected joint
Reduction of activity levels.
Shoe gear changes/Orthotic/Supportive devices
Lifestyle modification/ change of diet
Steroid injection
Gout is one of the most common causes of chronic inflammatory arthritis in the United States. It is characterized by elevated uric acid levels that results in the deposit of monosodium urate (MSU) monohydrate crystals in the tissues, commonly affecting the great toe joint.
